Only In A Small Town

Author: siggy

This could only happen in a small town:  I went to pick up a package I had been expecting at the post office and to my consternation it had closed ten minutes ago.

The postmaster was in the back finishing up.  I tapped the window to get her attention.  She unlocked the door and handed me my package.  This could happen only in a small town.

It makes a difference when someone knows you personally.  Then she asked the two people in the lobby whether they had any packages.  I wished her a happy new year and went my way.

WOW!!!!! Your postal person is a gem!! At my post office, in Durham, there was a line out the door two weeks before Christmas. Two clerks were working, and at EXACTLY two o’clock ON THE DOT, one of them closed his window and walked away…….WITH A ROOM FULL OF PEOPLE WAITING IN LINE. Someone in line said, “Well, that’s because of the union. He must leave now.” A grumble wave moved through the crowd. Luckily, I was just two people from the front of the line. I truly miss that small town familiarity!! I know that you’re not supposed to give gifts to postal workers, but it would never hurt to take in a plate of cookies as a thank you for the great service that you get.

    Sara,
I wrote another piece about our postmaster a few day before that. There is nothing like being in a small town.
