In the week I was gone the two tomato plants grew quickly. There were quite a few little green tomatoes while a week ago there was almost none. My wife had splurged and bought quite a few plants while I was on vacation–many still in their original containers and needed to be planted. She bought two beautiful budding fuchsia plants one of which I hung from the white pine tree in view from our large living room window. Every year we put one up there and the plant does well there as long as we keep it watered.
The weather finally became seasonal–sixties and seventies. I thought we went straight from winter into summer for a short time. At least it seemed that way. Today I was thrilled I noticed a flower that had little white snow bells. My wife said it was a perennial. The grass was also cut when I got home. All these things happened in the week I was gone.

Spring went straight into summer. I was gone a week. I know summer still has five weeks to go but that is the way it seemed. The big lilac bush bloomed while I was gone. There was new growth all over the place. All this in a week. I noticed the two patio tomato plants grew quite a bit. I still have not carefully inspected the garden. I am sure there are other changes. It has become the time of year I just wear tee shirts and shorts. Pretty soon I will be putting back the air conditioner in the bedroom. We discarded the thick blanket and the fan ran all night.

There were recent notable discoveries in our house. My wife has had a Christmas cactus over her back kitchen window for years. It had never bloomed but it did in the last week for the first time. She also placed some broken tentacles from a “monster” cactus I am now keeping in my office and today it bloomed. It has a pink flower almost five inches wide and five inches around. We have had the “monster” cactus bloom before but this is the first time it budded in our house.

It is the second day of spring but we will have to wait at least another two days for truly “spring” weather. The first day we had a minor snow storm. I expect the warmer weather will rapidly melt the snow. It won’t hang around for months this time. We already have some crocuses blooming although I did not see this first hand. They only bloom in the bright sunlight. Before I know it the long cold winter will be a distant memory.

The ten day forecast is forties high every day. That is the first time in months. Spring is less than two weeks away. Maybe the weather has turned a corner. Now I can start inspecting my garden every day for the sign of the first flowers of spring. There is still quite a bit of snow on the ground. Let us see if it melts within ten days of this “heat wave.”

Before I know it the slate covered juncos will be gone. There is a reason they are, also, called “snow” birds. The snow will melt, the temperatures will rise and they they will migrate North and will not return till next year. I keep checking the ten day forecast and temperatures will hit the forties in a few days and gradually rise and spring will be here–now only three weeks away. Last I checked the daffodils were not poking their head out of the ground but I have not looked in a week. The blooming of the crocus and primrose are not far away and then I will have to make daily inspections for the next sign of spring. Spring is a time of rebirth.

It is hard to imagine spring is less than four weeks away. The warmest it gets in the next ten days will be thirty-four degrees. That is the only time it will be above freezing. They are still predicting more snow. I do not want to leave the warmth of my house. As soon as the covering of the snow melts (as if it will ever) and that is how it feels right now, I will check to see if the daffodils are coming up. Those are the two spring flowers–daffodils and crocuses that come up first. Actually the primrose come up first but I am not sure any of them are left. It is too cold for even them.

I was watching a brand new branch come up of my rubber tree which I have in my study. There was an almost two foot section of a branch which lost all their leaves. There were leaves on one end. They were curling up and had trouble getting enough light. A few days ago I noticed in the middle of the bare branch there was sudden growth and it was growing fast: Each day I could see a change in growth. There were two leaves erupting with another coming up. I eagerly was watching this. It was a treat. Each day I awaited the new branch’s progress still in its infancy.

It was almost November and one pink rose was still blooming. The weather, on the whole, was still mild although the temperatures were still gradually dropping. It is hard to believe that in less than four weeks Thanksgiving will arrive. The clock gets changed this coming Sunday. The colder weather is coming but all I can think of is the weather of next spring. I wish I could hibernate. But I can’t. I will just endure the coming colder weather (and dress warmer).

The crocuses opened today–the first flowers in our garden. There were twelve purple flowers. I checked the daffodils on the side of the house. A few of them had buds already. It is a beautiful day today–almost sixty and a clear blue sky. This is an exciting time. All kinds of things are coming up. Let us see what the next discoveries will be.

My purple crocuses did not bloom yet. There are buds. But not yet. Everything is later this year due to the unnatural cold. My friend in another part of the county had a bed of crocuses in full bloom over a week ago. Maybe, there is more open sunlight on his land. I keep inspecting my crocuses. The daffodils are still a few weeks away from blooming.

Today I found out the color of the next budding Gerbera plant in our house. It was red. The other had three full orange flowers. It was an experiment that succeeded. They are annuals and survived the winter inside. I usually buy one or two a year. Sometimes we plant them outside or place them in the sun and other buds come up. It is just a flower I like and am thrilled to have them grow and have flowers in our house.
