Meds don’t help a lot of people. In fact, mess them up: they can’t think clearly and there are other equally bad side effects. And doctors keep using them on those patients. I am just one of the lucky ones. They actually helped and I was not given a drug cock tail. I still remember in the sixties and seventies being forced to take Thorazine in manic episodes and how awful it made me feel.

Oh, Siggy. Shame is so darned debilitating. We would not have to feel shame about mental illness if our culture was one that nurtured those who were different, ill, old, misshapen…….as a culture, I think we miss the mark, and we allow ourselves to be led by magazines and TV, telling us what’s perfect for us, perfect for our lives……there is no shame in having an illness that YOU DID NOT ASK FOR, DID NOT GIVE YOURSELF, COULD NOT AVOID. We need to educate ourselves about what it means to be imperfect because each and every one of us is imperfect in many ways!!

I’ve been attending a family workshop for those who love people with borderline personality disorder, and there is talk of meds, and how there are personality disorders (like bpd) for which meds don’t seem to help. We work with dialectic behavioral therapy, learning how to communicate better, and how to not let our own feelings escalate situations. Siggy, I thank you many, many times mentally for your openness about mental illness. You are a gift!

Let’s see……I just read a bunch! I, too, love a fence. Black moods do follow bad sleep, but for me, they follow several nights of incomplete sleep. Then, I don’t know if they’re black or merely kind of grey. I’m not me. But, then, who am I? The TV blurb made me smile. Oh, and the MP3, too. It’s nice to have so much music at our fingertips, but sometimes I’m just overwhelmed by the whole technological scene. When will it be too much?

Bird TV is the best! A sad note……..we had a very athletic squirrel figure out how to drop many feet from the pine tree onto the feeders, which hang on a shepherd’s hook type thing. We found him dead this week. Apparently he misjudged the jump and hurt his little heart when he hit the hook. We buried him in the Zen garden, lovingly, thanking him for his entertaining antics.

I love your dog stories…..and, what’s the deal with your primroses?? I now have that song “Primrose Lane” stuck in my brain and I can’t make it go away!

Tom says you are having a existential moment! High school reunions are to a degree, false. People put on their reunion faces and try to step back into time for a night or a week-end. Some think that they are in love with their old sweethearts……and some are. You have much to show for your life, Siggy. Reread the eulogy that I wrote for you. You have Saul and Emma. You have amazing knowledge of produce!! Your writing has touched many hearts. It doesn’t matter what others have done with their lives. You have made the best of your own!!!! (Secretly, I have always wanted to be at my high school reunion as a waitress……simply watching.) So many of my high school class have died!

I LOVE your humorous writing. The concept of clothes reproducing when we aren’t looking would be great for stand up comedy! I think most of us have too many clothes, too many choices on any given day. The thing I hate is when you have a piece that you love…..and you get rid of it……and then you forget that you got rid of it…….and you search for it until your brain FINALLY tells you that it is gone…..and you FEEL BAD!

We just don’t have a comfort zone with dying…….and that might be fear-based, I suppose. I liked your blurbs on too much stuff, alcoholism, and gratitude, too. Letting go of stuff is so incredibly freeing. It takes a huge amount of courage, though, and the belief that we are not our stuff, and life will go on just fine without it. Alcoholism has deeply impacted my life, and I am grateful that I can have a lovely glass of wine and put the rest away for another time. I have always thought that my dad just didn’t know how super a person he was sober. He died at age 64, just four years older than I am now. What a loss.
