First Day Of Spring

It was the first days of spring–somewhat cool.  It was in the forties.  I really did not have a countdown to spring this time.  Patches of snow still existed.  I was glad I no longer had to navigate the ice to my car in the driveway.  The ice existed for the longest time:  it was a combination of snowfalls and cold temperatures.  I just was glad spring finally arrived.  I no longer tolerate the cold that well.

Spring Is On Its Way

Spring is on its way. I heard someone in the bank say, ‘Today is going to be the hottest day of the year.’ I keep checking the bed of daffodils on the side of the house. Today a third clump was peeking its way through the earth. I still see no sign of the crocuses in our yard. The ten day weather forecast indicates we will get some more cold temperatures but the end of the winter is in sight.

Soon the hummingbirds will stop coming to my feeder.  And will take the long journey south.  I never know when I see the last one of the season but I will keep nectar out for a few more weeks for any stragglers.  The “passing” of the hummingbirds is another sign the warm weather is out and the cold temperatures are on their way.  I can become too used to their sight and they have to go away for me again to marvel at this creation of God.  It will be April, again, before they come back.  And I will await their arrival.

I have adjusted my expectations (of Spring).  My wife said it was really ‘December weather’ and I agreed.  Early morning it was nineteen degrees and currently it is thirty-three.  I will think cold and wait until it decides to become spring.  I have lowered my expectations.  It is really winter.  As far as I am concerned.

It will be more of the same temperatures. I checked the long range forecast and found out it will be cold for the next seven days–it will hit the low forties at most. Then the low fifties. Not very warm at all. We had one or two previews of spring whereby it hit the low seventies. It still feels like winter. It is easy to complain. Praise the Lord we can still pay our heat bills. I know it will get warmer. I just want it now if not sooner! I am clearly not in charge.

Spring was less than three days away.  It is a beautiful day.  The forecast said it would hit sixty degrees today.  The sky was blue with hardly a wisp of cloud.  I was tired of the cold temperatures.  I am ready for spring.  The daffodils are almost ten inches high.  I noted yesterday that one primrose was budding.  I was not sure we would have any.  Hope was on the horizon.  This long winter was almost over.

The temperature is always relative.  Someone I knew at the local library was from Minnesota where temperatures in the winter often fall thirty or forty below zero and was not fazed by single digits temperatures.

This week the temperatures were in the twenties and thirties and I thought we had a minor heat wave although keeping the house heated for over two days by our coal stove had something to do with that.

It became down right toasty in our house and I had to discard my thermal underwear.  And other extra layers.  It always depends what temperature is normal for that time of year.

I am starting to count the weeks of winter that have gone by.  It is still too early for my yearly countdown to spring.  But it is getting there.
