Winter Is A Week In

Winter is a week in. Still no extended freezes. An abnormally warm Fall. That means Spring might come sooner unless we get cold in the early Spring. The countdown has begun (to Spring). I’d hibernate but I don’t have that option.

It was as if someone hit a switch: summer was over and fall came. Summer has only a few days left officially. The warmer temperatures were gone and fall arrived. For that matter, August was not that warm. Now we can watch the fiery display of the leaves turning as we do each autumn.

I Just Want To Stay In

I just want to stay in:  it is thirty-seven degrees with a wind and cold.  Fall is already half over and then winter hits–how discouraging.  I will try to have enough clothing on when I go out and just bear it.  Before I know it, it will be spring.  At least, I like to delude myself that is true.

I did not want anyone to run over the flower.  It was one “freak” black-eyed susan that came up in September and the petals wilted for it became too cold.  Usually they bloom late summer.  I moved the garbage cans I brought out so it would not get trampled in the morning when the men came to empty the trash into their truck.  I liked looking at it.  You really do not know one hundred per cent what to expect from nature–this time one flower.

I spotted my first slate-colored junco in the yard two days ago.  I guess winter and snow is on its way.  The bird’s flittering back white wings was unmistakable.  It vanished into the undergrowth of the gigantic bush.  I saw my second one today.  Last night we got a smattering of snow.  I have a friend who calls them “snow” birds so, maybe, the sighting was no accident.  They are often found in flocks so as we get more snow I may see more.  I never see them in the summer.  It is a mystery to me where they go then.

I Just Wanted To Be In

I just wanted to be in.  I dashed out for a quick errand and noted the temperature outside was forty degrees according to my car thermometer.  The clouds were stormy and dark–snow clouds.  I guess the cold weather is here for good.  All I want to do is hibernate and only go out when it is necessary.  Next spring and summer seems an eternity away.

I put out fresh thistle today.  I had not seen a goldfinch in weeks.  I tried scraping out the caked thistle as best as I could using the end of a knife before putting out new thistle.  Let us see if the goldfinch come back.  And how long it will take.

November First Was Warm

Author: siggy

November first started auspiciously:  the forecast was seventy degrees.  I checked the ten day forecast and the temperature was all over the place–the highs were forties, fifties and even sixties.  So far it has been a warm fall.  I really do not care as long as I have the appropriate clothing on.  I do not like being cold.

The black-eyed susan is not going to make it.  There was a “freak” blossom but it became too cold and the bloom wilted before the flower unfurled.  Black-eyed susans usually bloom in the height of summer.  I was watching this particular flower really carefully.  It is four weeks into the Fall.  Indian summer has passed.  It is just too late in in the season.  The flower tried.  I felt bad for it.

Part of our yard was covered with pine needles.  It happens every fall.  We have four large white pine trees clumped together.  There were thousands, maybe millions, of brown pine needles that fell to the ground.  In fact, a few days ago we were playing a game of scrabble in our yard and there was an avalanche of pine needles upon us.  It amazed me there were so many.  This happens every Autumn–this shower of needles.

Indian Summer Is Over

Indian summer is over.  Within the last week, we ended a week of weather whereby it hit eighty each day.  Now sometimes the high temperature of the day falls below sixty degrees.  Now it is wet and cold.  I am no longer wearing tee shirts and shorts.  I have to pack them away.  The summer is over for good at least until next year.
