In a mere four days spring arrives.  I usually start a countdown to spring earlier but this weather was unusually warmer.  The primrose and crocuses have bloomed.  The daffodils are next.  Pretty soon we will start planting pansies and other flowers.

March ninth was the first day this year we played Scrabble in our yard. We were in the middle of a heat wave for this time of the year. I counted seventeen wide open purple crocuses and today one yellow primrose opened with more on the way. I know the temperature will get colder and more seasonal but I am enjoying this burst of spring.

Spring is coming, Spring is coming !!! I am waiting for today and tomorrow to end. Then we get five days of Spring-like weather. My crocuses have eleven buds, and the daffodils are getting higher and higher. I know the cold weather this year was short, but I still remember those ice cold days we had. Spring is less than two weeks away, and I can’t wait for it to come.

A Harbinger Of Spring

Some daffodils were poking their heads under the tree. This was a harbinger of spring. I checked the bed of primrose–no flowers yet.

My “monster” cactus which we hung up in my den has three buds. It does not tolerate the cold too well so we had to bring it inside the house. I have been watching the daily growth of these three buds. The cactus has five inch wide pink flowers and tentacles several feet long. Each day the buds are a little bigger. I was amazed we did not break any tentacles gently transporting it. We have had the plant for at least two years.

My wife spotted the plant from the bathroom window. I had to go outside to inspect it more closely. She brought it to my attention. The plant lay below the window and had delicate purple bells almost like another flower we had in another part of the yard except the other one was white and these purple flowers shaped in a bell were longer although about the same width. Another surprise that day. Life is full of little surprises and all you have to do is pay attention. How that flower got there I will never know. Serendipity!

Spring went straight into summer.  I was gone a week.  I know summer still has five weeks to go but that is the way it seemed.  The big lilac bush bloomed while I was gone.  There was new growth all over the place.  All this in a week.  I noticed the two patio tomato plants grew quite a bit.  I still have not carefully inspected the garden.  I am sure there are other changes.  It has become the time of year I just wear tee shirts and shorts.  Pretty soon I will be putting back the air conditioner in the bedroom.  We discarded the thick blanket and the fan ran all night.

It was almost November and one pink rose was still blooming. The weather, on the whole, was still mild although the temperatures were still gradually dropping. It is hard to believe that in less than four weeks Thanksgiving will arrive. The clock gets changed this coming Sunday. The colder weather is coming but all I can think of is the weather of next spring. I wish I could hibernate. But I can’t. I will just endure the coming colder weather (and dress warmer).

The crocuses opened today–the first flowers in our garden. There were twelve purple flowers. I checked the daffodils on the side of the house. A few of them had buds already. It is a beautiful day today–almost sixty and a clear blue sky. This is an exciting time. All kinds of things are coming up. Let us see what the next discoveries will be.

Today I found out the color of the next budding Gerbera plant in our house.  It was red.  The other had three full orange flowers.  It was an experiment that succeeded.  They are annuals and survived the winter inside.  I usually buy one or two a year.  Sometimes we plant them outside or place them in the sun and other buds come up.  It is just a flower I like and am thrilled to have them grow and have flowers in our house.

The one Gerbera daisy in the house had three orange flowers and the other one had at least two buds coming up and it was still a mystery what color they would be.  This is exciting because we brought in these two plants last year before the cold would have killed them.  Then not that long ago we moved them closer to the sun and both responded with flowers.

Spring Is A Day Away

Spring is a day away.  It has been abnormally cold.  Maybe, that is why there has been no evidence of crocuses–one of the first flowers of spring.  The daffodils are coming up–now only an inch high.  I really am tired of the cold.  Along with other people.  The next few days are going to be in the fifties.
