Don’t trap others:  always give each person a gracious way out.  I was, particularly, thinking of my “other.”  I try to give her as much freedom as I can.  If you make a request, make sure she has a way out.  Don’t trap her.  Always give her a gracious way to say, “No.”  Your mate does not exist solely for you.  She has her own set of desires and aspirations.  Hopefully you can help her with a few and with her growth.  Encouragement not entrapment.  You’re supposed to be her helpmate.

‘Eternal vigilance is the price of freedom.’  I think these were words uttered by Thomas Jefferson.  A check and balance system is necessary for government.  That means a free press.  Open dissent is always important.  It forces you to consider another point of view.  Someone is always going to try to take your freedom away.  That is a fact.  That is why eternal vigilance is so important.  I never forgot the ‘Pogo’ cartoon which said ‘I have met the enemy and it is me.’  Everyone has to do their part.  Each person has a role in a democracy.  You can’t ignore your role.  One of the most important ones is your vote.  It matters.  Sometimes an election is won or lost by mere votes so never forget that.  Exercise your freedom to vote.  We have to make our politicians responsive to our needs and not let big money dictate their votes in the legislatures-state and federal.  A politician fears the wrath of the public and the last thing he/she wants to lose is your vote. And they do read the letters you send them.  ‘Eternal vigilance is the price of freedom.’

You don’t know how important your freedom is until it is taken away.  That is the one thing my friend would desire more than anything at all–his freedom.  Presently, he is in jail and has none.  I was never in jail but I do have some idea how it feels to have your freedom taken away.  When I was in an hospital, I had my freedom taken away so I know how it feels.  My friend does not have too much materially but that is the one thing–your freedom that you can’t put a price tag on until you lose it.

The dark is your worst haven.  It is the time you magnify your problems.  You are all alone.  You can’t escape yourself.  There is no place to hide.  Somehow you have to break the chains the night puts on you.

And strive for the light, where freedom is.  And when you are surrounded by the night, you have to keep an eye and remain open for the light the dawn will bring.

There is always another way but the devil tries to convince you this is all there is when you are surrounded by the night.

When you are able to open your eyes to the possibilities the new day brings you can break the chains the night brings.

Every person has to face the evil wrought when the night falls.  Nevertheless hold on to your faith when darkness envelopes.

It is never too late to face the light and do not be deceived by the bleakness of the night.  It will end and the light always comes in the dawn we face each day.

I have no control of my wife but I do of me.  I can not fix her and Lord knows I have tried repeatedly with very little success.  I do have control of me and this revelation may appear to be obvious but I am an extremely slow learner and this idea I can only control me frees me.  Paradoxically I may be able to change her behavior by concentrating on mine but I can not act with that in mind.  I have to love her freely and not do anything because I am trying to change her for that is manipulation on my part.  All this is very freeing to me.

People are housed in different prisons.  Sometimes it is their circumstances or attitudes that can imprison them.  Let’s just talk about the first.

I have a friend who can not easily leave the house.  His wife needs around the clock care and she gets very anxious when he is not not there.

How many people think nothing of stepping out of their house and getting a burger, maybe, at the nearby McDonald’s and shopping at their local supermarket?

It is a simple freedom yet there are those that are home bound that can not partake of them so easily for different reasons.

His wife would do any thing in the whole world if she could do something as simple as give someone a hug.  And people, sometimes, complain about washing dishes.  She can’t do either:  she is paralyzed.

Sometimes you really do not know what you’ve got until you lose it.  And if you can get that simple freedom back you suddenly appreciate it more.  And sometimes you can’t go back.  It is lost forever and all you can do is mourn its loss.
