March ninth was the first day this year we played Scrabble in our yard. We were in the middle of a heat wave for this time of the year. I counted seventeen wide open purple crocuses and today one yellow primrose opened with more on the way. I know the temperature will get colder and more seasonal but I am enjoying this burst of spring.

It was a typical cold and wet March day. It certainly is not as cold as parts of winter were. Nevertheless, all I wanted to do was stay in. We are planning a movie date and a nice dinner. That was something to actually agree on a movie. That usually is very difficult for us to do. I found a comedy we had never seen. Warmer weather is on the horizon. I just have to keep that in mind. And enjoy the Sunday inside.

Suddenly I Could Breathe

Suddenly I could breathe.  The cold was really done.  For now.  Warmer weather was on the horizon.  Spring has started.  And March was typically wet.  In fact, today was the first day of the trout season in this area.  In May I will camp with my childhood buddy for the first time in three years.  The last two I visited him in New Orleans.  I have much to look forward to.  Warmer weather, particularly.  And trout fishing.  And getting together with my lifelong friend.

Still no appreciable snowfall.  It is March sixth.  We were supposed to get a few inches of snow last night but nothing happened.  Will we go through the whole winter and not get one snowfall greater than an inch or two.  Spring is now fourteen days away.  I still remember the winter snow lay on the ground for months (1996).  It did not happen this year.

Maybe the pair of bluebirds will come back.  Last year they checked out our bluebird nesting box in the backyard.  My wife spotted them out the kitchen window but the next day the bluebird box fell.  They never came back.  I did notice the nesting box fell again but I put it up more securely the next day.  It just turned March so it is early in the season so let us see if any bluebirds check out the spot.  And better yet raise a family while we watch.

It does feel like winter today.  The temperature is floating around the freezing point and there is a healthy wind blowing making it seem even colder.  Even my four dogs do not want to stay out too long in the yard.  Tomorrow is supposed to be more of this, then it warms up again.  When I woke up, there was a layer of snow on the ground but it was gone by the afternoon.  Spring is getting closer.  In a few days it will be March.  All of that does not matter.  All I want to do today is to stay in.  It is just too cold.

I have adjusted my expectations (of Spring).  My wife said it was really ‘December weather’ and I agreed.  Early morning it was nineteen degrees and currently it is thirty-three.  I will think cold and wait until it decides to become spring.  I have lowered my expectations.  It is really winter.  As far as I am concerned.

It Must Be Almost Spring

It must almost be spring.  Today I saw a robin near our feeders.  I ran out into the yard to make sure I was not mistaken and saw a pair of them hip hopping in the snow across the street.  A little later both of them lit on our front white pine tree:  I guess they could not find any food in the snow.  I was thrilled. And brought them to my (???) attention of my wife.  It was my first sighting of a robin this year.  Both of them were pretty fat so they had no shortage of food.  It was March 8 less than two weeks from spring.

When I woke up and looked outside our large living room window everything was blanketed by white.  The trees, ground were all covered by white.  In fact, it was a wet snow.  It was just cold enough to snow last night.  The branches of our large white pine in front of our window were bowed down by the weight of the snow.  There were some broken branches lying on the ground.

This was a rough year for that pine tree.  It lost several large branches during at least three storms.  I immediately put out more birdseed when I got up.  This may be the last snowstorm of the year so I took a long look at all the trees and ground.  I may not see such a scene until next year.  It was March 7, so it is possible we may get another such storm but the days were getting warmer and warmer.  This storm had taken us by surprise.

It is March 12 and I am looking for my first sighting of a red winged blackbird.  I pass a marsh near my house.  The farmer puts out bird houses for these blackbirds.  They come back every year.

Every time I pass this area I have my eyes open to spot these beautiful blackbirds.  I looked today but I could not see any.  I did not see any with their tell tale red wings but I will keep looking for them every time I go on this road.

I have always loved seeing these birds.  And this is one place I look for them.  I just wonder where they spent their winters and how far did they have to travel to get here.  I will keep looking for them.  I just think they are beautiful birds.
