The snowy egret was perched on top of a nesting box. There was, maybe, half a dozen such boxes on the perimeter of the marsh. Every time I pass this marsh by car I quickly glance up and down the waters top(???) see what I could spot. Sometimes there are deer drinking water on its edge. I have seen an occasional great egret or snowy egret on its perimeter. That was an odd place to see an egret perched on a nesting box.

We were looking for alligators.  And red-cockaded woodpeckers who are on the endangered list.  They were in a certain tract of land and we had no luck spotting any.  We went on several paths that also went through marsh but had no luck in spotting any alligators.  It was just too cold.  We did spot quite a few large turtles in the water but that is all.  And one snake.

I now have my eyes open for the red-winged blackbirds when I pass that marsh.  They return there every year and I keep my eyes open for them especially for the telltale red wings which could only be seen when they fly.  I did pass a blackbird in that area.  It was sitting in a tree and I did not get a good look at it.  It would have color on its shoulder, which is harder to spot.  I was not able to make a positive ID.

There was a hawk I could not identify despite looking in three bird books.  He was again spotted sitting on a wire kind of scrunched up dark brown over twelves inches tall.  He was near a marsh again for the third time.  Last week we spotted an immature bald eagle (no white head) and a red tailed hawk (identified by my wife) both flying high in the sky.  Nearby the eagle there is an eagle nest high up the cliff which could only be seen when the trees had no leaves.  This could be the third year it was there.  We are still waiting for the first goldfinch to come to our thistle feeder.  I don’t understand why they have not found it.  I did put out fresh thistle.  Maybe, they have not come because I did not clean the feeder.  My faucet for outside was still turned off.  My wife today saw her first crocuses going into town.  Every day there will be more surprises.  That is the wonder of spring.

I spotted another deer at the marsh I pass from my car.  It had its head down drinking the water.  Every time I pass that area I look up and down the water curious each time what I may find.  I do like mystery and to me the marsh is a mystery.  I do not know who owns it nor what I will see if anything but I keep looking.  I love surprises.

Every time I pass that marsh on my right from my car I peer down the two different bodies of water.  Sometimes I see nothing.  Other times I have seen great egrets and snowy egrets at its borders.  This time I saw three deer lined up in a row all the way back at the edge of the water.  I had never seen deer there before.  I always wondered about the owner of that piece of property.  He has bird boxes in strategic spots there.  I am sure he loves the property and its inhabitants.  I am only briefly visiting it.  I wonder if there is any fish in it.  It is not mine but I love passing and looking at it.  I always wonder about it.

Every time I pass a stream or a river I gaze downstream (or upstream).  To me the body of water represents mystery.  If I am on foot I want to see if I spot any fish or other creature in the water.  By car, I am on the outlook for any kind of duck or egret or other bird.  I am always curious what I will see.  There is a marsh nearby and I am always looking for a snowy egret or the much larger great egret there.  I could not believe it when I flushed a blue heron who was drinking the water of the small creek less than an hundred yards from my house.  I face nature with a sense of wonder.  There is always the sense of mystery.  I know the Almighty has instilled that in me and every child has it and far too many lose it.  To view this universe without a sense of awe is a great loss.  With it, you will discover wonders and beauty all around you.  All you have to do is open your eyes with a sense of expectation.

It is March 12 and I am looking for my first sighting of a red winged blackbird.  I pass a marsh near my house.  The farmer puts out bird houses for these blackbirds.  They come back every year.

Every time I pass this area I have my eyes open to spot these beautiful blackbirds.  I looked today but I could not see any.  I did not see any with their tell tale red wings but I will keep looking for them every time I go on this road.

I have always loved seeing these birds.  And this is one place I look for them.  I just wonder where they spent their winters and how far did they have to travel to get here.  I will keep looking for them.  I just think they are beautiful birds.
