In a mere four days spring arrives.  I usually start a countdown to spring earlier but this weather was unusually warmer.  The primrose and crocuses have bloomed.  The daffodils are next.  Pretty soon we will start planting pansies and other flowers.

A Harbinger Of Spring

Some daffodils were poking their heads under the tree. This was a harbinger of spring. I checked the bed of primrose–no flowers yet.

The mums in a pot outside were flowering for a third time. There were white and pink and yellow flowers. My wife kept cutting them down after each bloom. It was November although they like the cold. The primrose are coming up in the garden. Although they like it even colder. At least one year they bloomed throughout the whole winter. There was no extended freeze that year.

Before I know it the slate covered juncos will be gone. There is a reason they are, also, called “snow” birds. The snow will melt, the temperatures will rise and they they will migrate North and will not return till next year. I keep checking the ten day forecast and temperatures will hit the forties in a few days and gradually rise and spring will be here–now only three weeks away. Last I checked the daffodils were not poking their head out of the ground but I have not looked in a week. The blooming of the crocus and primrose are not far away and then I will have to make daily inspections for the next sign of spring. Spring is a time of rebirth.

The Cold Freeze

It is hard to imagine spring is less than four weeks away. The warmest it gets in the next ten days will be thirty-four degrees. That is the only time it will be above freezing. They are still predicting more snow. I do not want to leave the warmth of my house. As soon as the covering of the snow melts (as if it will ever) and that is how it feels right now, I will check to see if the daffodils are coming up. Those are the two spring flowers–daffodils and crocuses that come up first. Actually the primrose come up first but I am not sure any of them are left. It is too cold for even them.

I don’t think the primrose will survive the winter.  We are in the middle of an extended freeze.  The last two years they never died and bloomed through out the winter.  That was somewhat unusual.  As hardy as they are they will not make it this time.  It has been too cold, for too long.  They will come up, again, in early spring and bloom then.

The waxed begonias–both beds–and the two Gerbera Daisies are doing fine.  In fact in the last week I discovered the bright red Gerbera Daisy has a second flower this one facing the fence and the orange one has another bud coming up.  It is only the beginning of Fall so let us see how long these flowers flourish.  When it turns colder I will keep my eyes open for signs of the primrose.  There is, I believe, six different colored primrose.  I love watching my yard for different signs of life, particularly, the flowers.  Some are wild, some aren’t.

There is nothing like home sweet home.  I was gone for a week visiting an old friend.  My wife was “sigless”.  In the interim, the trees have become greener and the temperature had gotten a little warmer.  The lilac bush is abloom.  I really have to walk around my yard to note the changes.  It has not gotten too hot yet so the primrose still are blooming.  I am just glad to be home.  I can make my own morning coffee just the way I like to and play my own music any time I want to.  I noted, again, how beautiful the area I live in is.  We can get too comfortable in our own surrounding.  It is good to get away once in awhile.  You appreciate your wife and your immediate surroundings better.

That bed of primrose had yellow, pink, dark red, purple and white flowers.  During the winter only the yellow ones budded.  I was told they are the most hardy.  Now it has warmed up and is still somewhat cool so the other ones budded.  The primrose don’t like the warm weather but spring is only a few weeks in.  We bought two other varieties of primrose yesterday.  We will have seven different colored primrose in that bed now.

Today there was one purple primrose blooming–one flower with a yellow star inside.  I was told recently that the yellow primrose are hardier.  I planted several other colored primrose but this is the first one that was not just yellow.  There are some other buds coming up.  Let us see what colors they will be.  It is getting a little warmer.  The yellow primrose have been blooming for weeks now.  The daffodils have not bloomed yet but I keep checking them every day or two.

It was six-twenty PM and still light.  This Sunday is daylight saving time and the clock gets moved forward an hour so it will be lighter longer.  There is no more the gloom of winter time when it got dark much earlier.  We are even having days in the fifties.  Everything will start to turn green.  Soon the daffodils will bloom as well as the tulips and crocuses.  Again for the second straight year the winter did not kill the primrose.  We had no extended freezes.  Now spring officially is less than two weeks away.

Spring Was On its Way

Spring was on its way.  I checked the bed of daffodils that come up every year and there were nubs coming up.  I never checked them so early during winter.  It was the last day of January.  Last time I looked the primrose were still blooming.  They like the cold.  We have had temperatures as low as 3 degrees in the morning so maybe the primrose finally died.  I am going to look.  Nevertheless, spring was still a bit off.  We have had snow but only minor storms.  It is still a bit to go.  The worst is not over.  Groundhog day is coming, though.
