In almost the same spot I saw a flock of half grown wild turkeys milling around on the side of the road only twenty feet from a small creek.  The last time I counted nine turkeys.  I never know when I will flush a turkey on that road.  Usually it is only one or two I see at one time.  That is the most I have ever seen on this road.

I spotted the box turtle crossing our road. I had not seen one near our house in several years. I shouted out to my “other” so she could run out and see the six inch turtle. Occasionally in the past another turtle would show up at our doorsteps but this one was a little smaller. When the turtle saw us, it scurried across the road and hid behind our garbage cans. We briefly saw it between two cans. We left it alone and it vanished. I always wonder how old it might have been. My guess it was at least twenty years old. We don’t see them too often in front of our house. There is a small creek in back. It came from our neighbor’s yard. You never know when you will see them. They are reclusive: they usually run away from you. I just make sure when I see one in the road, they make it safely to the other side. It is amazing how quickly they can run once they catch sight of you.

Every time I pass a stream or a river I gaze downstream (or upstream).  To me the body of water represents mystery.  If I am on foot I want to see if I spot any fish or other creature in the water.  By car, I am on the outlook for any kind of duck or egret or other bird.  I am always curious what I will see.  There is a marsh nearby and I am always looking for a snowy egret or the much larger great egret there.  I could not believe it when I flushed a blue heron who was drinking the water of the small creek less than an hundred yards from my house.  I face nature with a sense of wonder.  There is always the sense of mystery.  I know the Almighty has instilled that in me and every child has it and far too many lose it.  To view this universe without a sense of awe is a great loss.  With it, you will discover wonders and beauty all around you.  All you have to do is open your eyes with a sense of expectation.

In A Blink Of An Eye

Author: siggy

It happened in a blink of an eye.  I was not thinking.  And driving probably a little too fast on that stretch of road nearby.  A deer darted in front of me from my left.  I reacted instinctively and stepped on the brakes just enough to miss it by inches.

It was a stretch of the road I am usually more cautious on.  Deer cross the road to drink from the small creek below.  I have often flushed deer here but I was preoccupied.  It was the also the middle of the day.

After that close call I was shaking.  You bet I drove slower and more carefully on the way home.  Your life can change in a split second.  Sometimes we forget that.  Angels are often watching over us.
