It was a typical cold and wet March day. It certainly is not as cold as parts of winter were. Nevertheless, all I wanted to do was stay in. We are planning a movie date and a nice dinner. That was something to actually agree on a movie. That usually is very difficult for us to do. I found a comedy we had never seen. Warmer weather is on the horizon. I just have to keep that in mind. And enjoy the Sunday inside.

It has been a lazy Sunday morning.  I missed church and still have my sweats and moccasins on.  I am finished with my morning coffee.  We made plans to go to a church evening service so I have to make myself more presentable:  shave, shower, etc.  My day is just starting although it is past twelve PM.  It is never too late to take your day more seriously.  It matters.

Sunday Slipped By

Author: siggy

Sunday slipped by:  from that point it is six weeks to spring officially.  Now I can start my six weeks countdown to spring.  Temperatures will gradually rise and the cold weather will disappear again.  I do this every year.  Winter is on its way out after it hits the midpoint.  It makes it a little bit bearable.  I never liked the cold.  I never lived in a climate other than a temperate one.  I just endure winter and its accompanying cold weather.

The highlight of my day is ten o’clock in the morning when the mail gets here.  Of course, Sunday there is no delivery.  Sometimes (and often) it is just a bill or junk mail but once in a while I get something more personal like a letter from a friend.  Some junk mail is more interesting than others.  Some is simply someone who wants a contribution.  Sometimes I may get an CD I have ordered or better yet a book.  After the mail gets here it is all downhill.  The mail is always the highpoint of my day.

The “Blue Laws”?!  Are you old enough to remember them?  It used to be illegal for most places to be open on Sunday.  They were called the “blue laws”.  I am not sure how they came about.

It probably had something to do with Sunday being the Sabbath and a day of rest.  Now most establishments are open on Sunday–at least most retail stores.

It is just another sales day.  I am not convinced stores make more sales (and money) because they are open seven days a weeks but most stores are afraid they will lose business if they are not open, also, on Sunday.

It really is not a bad idea to recognize one day as the Sabbath and have one day to rest.  There is a reason one of the ten commandments is to observe the Sabbath.

God certainly does not need a day to rest.  A day of rest one day a week forces you to regularly evaluate your life and change direction if you need to.

It is too easy to keep going faster and faster and get nowhere.  The Sabbath enables you to get off the treadmill.

It always makes a difference to you when you do not wear your watch:  my watch band broke.  The last two Sundays I went to church I did not have a watch on.  The time flowed differently.  I focused more fully on the service.  I did not get impatient.  I never forgot the comment of Gulliver in “Gulliver’s Travels” when he was asked by the Lilliputians (the little people) what that large ticking machine (referring to his watch) was and he replied, “It is my God.  I would not do anything without first consulting it.”  Too many people consult their watches way too frequently and lead their lives by the book and heavily regimented.  They never learn to flow with the moments they deem important.  It is an interesting experiment to leave your watch at home and learn to flow with your important moments.  God knows there are enough clocks around to keep your appointments on time.  Try it some time.  Take your watch off for a day or two or even a week.  See how that changes your perception of the events occurring around you and through you.
