March ninth was the first day this year we played Scrabble in our yard. We were in the middle of a heat wave for this time of the year. I counted seventeen wide open purple crocuses and today one yellow primrose opened with more on the way. I know the temperature will get colder and more seasonal but I am enjoying this burst of spring.

That bed of primrose had yellow, pink, dark red, purple and white flowers.  During the winter only the yellow ones budded.  I was told they are the most hardy.  Now it has warmed up and is still somewhat cool so the other ones budded.  The primrose don’t like the warm weather but spring is only a few weeks in.  We bought two other varieties of primrose yesterday.  We will have seven different colored primrose in that bed now.

The purple crocuses are still blooming.  They last a long time although they are not open the whole day depending on the daylight.  The yellow primrose are the only other flowers blooming.  For the second year in a row they made it through the whole winter.  I checked on our daffodils.  They are not blooming yet.  Other flowers are coming up like the hyacinth and tulip and I am sure there will be others.  It is exciting to walk around our land and see what is coming next.  I once had a teacher who had lived in Hawaii and did not understand what spring meant to others until she moved here.  Spring is always an reawakening of the earth here.

The yellow primrose are still blooming.  This indicates how warm this winter has been.  There has been no extreme extended freezes.  They like cold weather but usually they die when the temperature drops and stays there for a few days.  I only remember one or two frigid days so far–not enough to kill the primrose.  I never remember the primrose blooming this late in the season.  This winter has really been mild.

I keep checking the bed of primroses we have.  One plant is about to bloom a third yellow flower.  The other four plants do not have any buds but I keep checking them periodically.  Having flowers in 35 degree temperatures is a real treat as opposed to spring and summer when everything seems to be into bloom.  I will enjoy that budding plant today realizing how precious and rare it is.
