I have been feeding the cottontails.  Two days ago I flushed one, which was feeding on the scraps from the fresh Brussels sprouts.  Every day I put out carrots and cut up apples and they are usually gone within twenty-four hours.  I keep checking so I know this for sure.  I like watching the tuft of their tail whenever I flush them as they hop away.

Sometimes produce reminds us of the temporal nature of things. I bought Winesap apples recently. It is one of my favorite apples. It is not here too long–a few weeks if that long at all.

I love Seckel pears but the season is done for them. They are little but very tasty pears. I managed to buy them twice. Now I have to wait til next year.

I bought at my favorite produce store Bartlett pears several times last year. They were unlike those you can’t get in the big supermarkets. They were tree ripened and were absolutely delicious. This year I managed to miss them.

There are so many things in life here today gone tomorrow. And you have to appreciate them when they are here. Produce reminded me of that. There are seasons for each one. And they are all different.

I still love Macintosh apples after all these years.  I was shopping at Aldi’s a week ago and I bought two bags of them.  I usually can tell just by looking at them whether they are going to be crispy.

I once met the apple buyer of a large supermarket chain and he told me how fickle these apples were.  They had to be stored at just the right range of temperature.  Well Aldi’s must have it right.  Their apples were extremely crisp and tart.

I worked as a produce clerk for years and found out there are many varieties of apples and I have sampled each one that came along.  Macintosh is still my favorite.  And I have no explanation why.  It just is.
