The goldfinch stopped coming in flocks.  In the last week.  Sometimes between the finch feeder and sunflower feeder there could be seen at one time five or six or more goldfinch.  In the last week they stopped coming in throes.  Now I am lucky if I see more than one or two at one time.  I have no explanation for this.  I did nothing different.  I am not sure if goldfinch migrate.  That would be a possible explanation.  I have to ask someone about this.  I am just curious about that.

The red bellied woodpecker was back.  When the grackles took over, they disappeared.  After I figured out how to discourage them, the downy woodpeckers returned.  It has been several months since I last saw the larger woodpecker come to feed on my suet cakes.  I could never figure out why they call this bird a red bellied woodpecker.  The red markings are on its head not its belly but in back of their head.  Anyway, I was thrilled to see one today and hope it comes back.

The grackles finally stopped coming.  First, I stopped putting out suet cakes and then limited the birdseed on the ground.  Sometimes I would have seven or more grackles feeding on the ground at one time.  They crowded out the other birds.  Now I have not seen one in weeks.  This summer I had a regular visitor of a indigo bunting for the first time.  They are such a beautiful bird–aptly named. The downy woodpeckers are now feeding on the suet but I have yet to see a red bellied woodpecker.  I am waiting to see how long it will take before they rediscover the suet cakes.  I can’t remember the last one I have seen.  They are such magnificent colored woodpeckers.

Yesterday my wife found a nest in the garage.  Some months ago I suspected a Carolina wren had a nest nearby.  Usually when I spot the bird singing perched on top of our fence several times she has a nest nearby.  I looked and could not find the nest.  Once I found a baby bird flying around the garage.  I made sure it found its way outside.  I then suspected there might be a nest in the garage but, again, I could not locate it.  Yesterday, my wife spotted a bird nest inside near the entrance of the garage.  This is the third year in a row a Carolina wren has nested in our immediate area.

Two days ago we had a flock of three indigo buntings visit us.  We have had one indigo bunting come to feed on the birdseed on the ground for weeks.  This time he brought his friends.  They are aptly named:  it is a small bird deeply purple all over.  I’ve read they feed in flocks but this is the first time in a long time I have seen more than one at a time.  It is always a treat to watch one, for they are so beautiful and uniquely colored.  There is no other bird like them here.  They are “jewels.”

You never know what you will see in the sky. I was driving and happened to look up. There was this tiny bird way up chasing away another who was at least ten times larger right on his tail. I guess the bird must have invaded his space. I was amazed. I guess some birds can be quite feisty.

In almost the same spot I saw a flock of half grown wild turkeys milling around on the side of the road only twenty feet from a small creek.  The last time I counted nine turkeys.  I never know when I will flush a turkey on that road.  Usually it is only one or two I see at one time.  That is the most I have ever seen on this road.

A pair of catbirds were hanging around.  Usually that means they might have a nest nearby.  I looked and found a nest in a large bush.  I never did see one in it.  This is not the first time we have had a catbird nesting nearby.  Another time a half grown catbird found its way into our garage and I was thrilled when my son captured it and let it go in the bush they were nesting in.  Last year we had a Carolina wren nesting only feet from our door step.  It kept hopping on top of our fence nearby and then I found out what a lovely voice it has.  I did find the nest.  You never know what bird will have a nest nearby.

I did spot the first hummingbird.  It was not in PA but in my friend’s yard.  I was visiting a friend in another state.  It briefly hovered over one of his two bushes of red flowers.  The bird immediately disappeared.  My wife did not see any hummingbirds in our yard. Usually by the end of April I see one. Today is the last day of the month. Still no hummingbird there.

My wife will see the first hummingbird of the season.  I am going away.  I am jealous.

Traditionally the hummingbird (???) have been spotted by the end of April.  I leave for a week in less than forty-eight hours so I am running out of time.

I saw a red-tailed hawk in a spot I usually do not.  It was less than a mile away at a road nearby.  It flew over my front of my car across the road and alighted on top of a tree.  I backed up to get a better look at it but it was gone.  They are a common hawk in this area.  They are quite big and I always am amazed by their size.  I see one periodically.

Every morning I look out the window at the hummingbird feeders and expect to see a hummingbird.  But I don’t.  I am leaving for a week vacation in less than a week and wonder if my wife will see one before me.  She is staying home.
