Where do the slate-colored juncos go in the warm weather? It is still relatively cold and they still are in the yard feeding on the birdseed on the ground. There are less of them. I know they will disappear when it gets warmer and no more snow. I thought I read they migrate further north. I am really curious. I have to look it up in one of my bird books. It is usually the other way around. Some birds migrate when it become colder. Not those birds. They usually arrive when the first snow comes. It is a mystery to me.

The goldfinch stopped coming in flocks.  In the last week.  Sometimes between the finch feeder and sunflower feeder there could be seen at one time five or six or more goldfinch.  In the last week they stopped coming in throes.  Now I am lucky if I see more than one or two at one time.  I have no explanation for this.  I did nothing different.  I am not sure if goldfinch migrate.  That would be a possible explanation.  I have to ask someone about this.  I am just curious about that.

I looked into the darkening sky when I heard the honking.  I saw a flock of Canada Geese, which were flying V shaped single file.  I never saw so many at one time.  There must have been over 200 geese.  From the tip to one end could have been 100 yards.  I wanted to call my wife to show her the sight but it would be too late.  It was nearing dusk and I am sure they were seeking a body of water to call it a night.  I was amazed at seeing so many at one time.

There is a slight chill in the air.  I checked the weather forecast for the next six days and the temperature has dropped a few degrees.  Labor Day is less than two weeks away.  I know now that summer is on its way out.

There are other signs:  the hummingbirds who regularly visit my feeder have dwindled.  I think there is only one who regularly feeds on my nectar.  I can tell this only by noticing how quickly my nectar for them is going down.  The others must have started their long journey down south.

All of a sudden we no longer have to run the air conditioner in our office.  Last night for the first time for months covering myself with a sheet was not enough.  I had to get my blanket.

School is about to start.  I may have bought my last watermelon for the season.  The local peaches are almost gone.  Fall is coming.  And before I know it Thanksgiving will be here.  After Halloween.
