I Read In Bursts

Author: siggy

I read in bursts, a paragraph here and there. Sometimes I amaze myself and actually read a whole page. To read a book is a miracle, but to read a novel I have to be mesmerized and turn page after page in wonder.

Knowledge is a circle I had to realize. All knowledge is connected. I do not learn by reading a book sequentially. I usually learn in bursts. That caused me some problems in school. The teacher expected you to make it through a book, then another, etc. Anyway, I surround myself with books. A burst here, a burst there. I even occasionally read a book from cover to cover. Most times I open it anywhere and start reading. I am not compelled to read a book from beginning to end. Novels are difficult. One type of book I do read from cover to cover are interesting memoirs.

I Hate Exercise But…

Author: siggy

I hate exercise but… It is a long “but”.  I have to find activities I like doing like walking my dog, playing tennis, shooting hoops (usually alone) and other activities.  I do hate exercise for exercise sake.

I have never been able to do that.  I want to enjoy what I am doing not make it “work”.  And I imagine there are many people like me out there.  Getting in shape is just a byproduct.  So find things out there you like doing.

And if you have to start slowly that is fine.  I am no longer seventeen.  And I recognize my limits although I push myself a little harder each day.  I have to do it slowly.  Figure out what you enjoy doing.  And do it.  And you may be surprised at the results.

Just take your time and do whatever you do regularly.  And you will get into shape.  The human body is meant to be used.  We have become such a sedentary society.  And I am included in that group.  It seemed so much harder after I got out of school to stay in shape.

Why do most teachers in high school and college act as if the whole world learns only by lecture.  I could never understand that.  You would think that is the way everyone learns and I know this is not true.

Some people are kinesthetic learners.  They learn by doing.  Physically doing something.  Some of the most famous dancers did not shine until their parents recognized this and put them in the proper environment.

There are always clues how you learn but somehow you have to recognize them.  There are people who like taking things apart and putting them together.  What do you spend most of your time doing?

So many times a student is a square peg and the system is trying unsuccessfully to put them in a round hole.  I really do not understand why public education is so bad and insists the student learn in a way which is not always to their liking or leaning.

I could personally identify with this.  I was at an disadvantage in school because I did not learn from lecture.  And I am sure there are many others like me.

In fact a college was going to call me handicapped for that reason.  I think that is absurd.  Somehow the parent has to advocate for their child and find the best situation for them.

The situation in which they will flourish.  Every person is different and learns in their own way.  The parent has to figure that out.  Not every one reads but every person excels in one at least one area.  The parent has to figure out where it is.  And put his child in that situation.

There is a slight chill in the air.  I checked the weather forecast for the next six days and the temperature has dropped a few degrees.  Labor Day is less than two weeks away.  I know now that summer is on its way out.

There are other signs:  the hummingbirds who regularly visit my feeder have dwindled.  I think there is only one who regularly feeds on my nectar.  I can tell this only by noticing how quickly my nectar for them is going down.  The others must have started their long journey down south.

All of a sudden we no longer have to run the air conditioner in our office.  Last night for the first time for months covering myself with a sheet was not enough.  I had to get my blanket.

School is about to start.  I may have bought my last watermelon for the season.  The local peaches are almost gone.  Fall is coming.  And before I know it Thanksgiving will be here.  After Halloween.
