The one Gerbera daisy in the house had three orange flowers and the other one had at least two buds coming up and it was still a mystery what color they would be.  This is exciting because we brought in these two plants last year before the cold would have killed them.  Then not that long ago we moved them closer to the sun and both responded with flowers.

Spring Is A Day Away

Spring is a day away.  It has been abnormally cold.  Maybe, that is why there has been no evidence of crocuses–one of the first flowers of spring.  The daffodils are coming up–now only an inch high.  I really am tired of the cold.  Along with other people.  The next few days are going to be in the fifties.

Both my wife and I appreciated the orange Gerbera daisy that bloomed in our house.  The two plants were left over from last year.  The plants were annuals that would have died in the cold.  Recently she moved both plants closer to the window.  And one bloomed.  Both looked healthier.  I counted three buds on the other plant.  Let us see if that one blooms, too.  And what color the flower will be.  Every morning we look at that orange bloom both of become a little happier.  This was an experiment that worked to our surprise.

Spring Is On Its Way

Spring is on its way. I heard someone in the bank say, ‘Today is going to be the hottest day of the year.’ I keep checking the bed of daffodils on the side of the house. Today a third clump was peeking its way through the earth. I still see no sign of the crocuses in our yard. The ten day weather forecast indicates we will get some more cold temperatures but the end of the winter is in sight.

We actually had a Gerbera daisy bloom in our house today–an orange one. It was winter time. We had brought in two plants before it became cold. And one decided to bloom. One had never done that before. The orange flower is a harbinger of spring. We are in the middle of a “heatwave”: it will hit forty for at least five days. I am praying all our snow and ice melts so we don’t pray for our life every time we walk the forty feet to our cars.

I made several small discoveries today. My rubber tree in my office had new growth on four branches. I forgot that it has dormant periods. It is over three feet high. I give it a little water every day. That is the extent of my care. I never had one do well before. I will just continue doing what I am doing. I like looking at it every day and noticing anything new about it.

There were actually six goldfinch on my thistle feeder briefly and I noticed five or six also on my sunflower feeder at the same time. Goldfinch will sit there five minutes feeding. Now they are all gone. All the birds appeared to be male. That seems a little odd.

Last fall before the cold killed the two Gerbera daisies outside we brought them in. The annuals were going to die any way. And stuck both plants by the window and occasionally would give them water. The one closer to the window actually had a flower we discovered yesterday. I could not determine the color yet.

These were just three small observations I made in the last twenty-four hours.

The primrose are still alive despite the “arctic” temperatures that just passed.  The freeze lasted at least four days but the primrose were protected:  they were covered by snow during that period.  I am still waiting to see if any of them bud.  I am checking them every day.  The next few days are going to be warm–in the forties and then back to seasonable temperatures–thirties and twenties.  Primrose do like cold weather.  Let us see if they will bloom.

I don’t think the primrose will survive the winter.  We are in the middle of an extended freeze.  The last two years they never died and bloomed through out the winter.  That was somewhat unusual.  As hardy as they are they will not make it this time.  It has been too cold, for too long.  They will come up, again, in early spring and bloom then.

I have been inspecting our bed of primrose in my yard every morning.  They like this cold weather but still no more flowers.  There are at least five plants in that bed but so far there has been only one flower from the bunch.  A few weeks ago.  I will keep an eye on them.  The weather is to their liking so it should have more buds soon.

Our “monster” cactus in my office bloomed today.  That is something we never expected when we moved the plant in when it became cold.  I meant to show the large pink flower to my wife this morning but I forgot.  The flower was five inches long from stem to tip and four inches wide.  There are four more buds on it.  One that received the least amount of light fell off.  I never had a cactus bloom in my house.  It was a miracle.

I was amazed:  one of the Gerbera daisies we brought inside was doing so well that I looked closely and saw a bud coming up.  We had two plants outside and brought them in.  We knew the cold would kill them.  Both of them are putting out shoots and one is budding.  I never had a Gerbera daisy do that inside so now I will watch that particular plant.  I wonder what color the flower will be.  We will see.

I did not want anyone to run over the flower.  It was one “freak” black-eyed susan that came up in September and the petals wilted for it became too cold.  Usually they bloom late summer.  I moved the garbage cans I brought out so it would not get trampled in the morning when the men came to empty the trash into their truck.  I liked looking at it.  You really do not know one hundred per cent what to expect from nature–this time one flower.
