The waxed begonias–both beds–and the two Gerbera Daisies are doing fine.  In fact in the last week I discovered the bright red Gerbera Daisy has a second flower this one facing the fence and the orange one has another bud coming up.  It is only the beginning of Fall so let us see how long these flowers flourish.  When it turns colder I will keep my eyes open for signs of the primrose.  There is, I believe, six different colored primrose.  I love watching my yard for different signs of life, particularly, the flowers.  Some are wild, some aren’t.

It was in the fifties and when I stepped out I felt cold.  It is back to wearing more layers of clothing.  Soon I will discard my tee shirts and shorts for the rest of the year.  It is still officially Summer but it feels like Fall already.  I always wondered how it would feel not to live in a temperate climate.  Maybe if I didn’t, I would not appreciate spring and the warmer weather so much.

It Is Becoming Colder

It is becoming colder.  I am no longer wearing tee shirts and shorts, which I do all summer.  Now I am wearing long pants and undershirt and shirt.  The next thing I have to put on when it gets even colder is a sweat shirt or sweater.  Fall is around the corner.  The leaves are starting to fall.

The greatest discovery I made today was my “monster” cactus hanging from a tree outside had two buds near the ground. Its tentacles are several inches wide and over three feet long.  When my wife bought the cactus months ago, it was flowering.  I have been examining the gigantic cactus every day.  Each day the two buds grow larger.  I don’t think these flowers will be as large as the ones last spring, that were four or five inches wide and three or four inches long.  And four days later I spotted two more buds, this time near the top of it just emerging.  It is going to be a race to fall.  And the colder weather.  Let us see how many flowers will emerge before we have to bring the cactus in the house?

It actually felt cold when I stepped out into my yard this morning.  It was under sixty degrees.  We had just gotten over a heatwave that lasted over a week.  First every day was in the nineties, then in the eighties.  I did not use the air conditioner in my bedroom last night.  I know it will get hot again but this was a precursor of fall.

Some Quick Pictures

I went into town and looked across the road by the bank of the river and the neighboring isle.  Two hawks were in the air and alighting on the slivers of land.  I really did not know what kind they were but they did not behave like the ubiquitous turkey hawk although they were about the same size.  Their flight pattern was different.  I hope to identify them in my hawk book.

“Sweetie” my golden retriever always likes having something in her mouth.  She was outside gnawing on a large chunk of a branch.  She brought it in the house and I put it outside.  I did not want her to “mulch” it in making a big mess I would have to clean up.

I was coming home today and just to the right of me were, maybe, several hundred small blackbirds feeding on the ground separated from each other by several inches.  Twice a year flocks of small blackbirds come through –the spring and fall.  They must be migrating.  These are a few quick “pictures”.

The first snowfall this fall came last night.  It was a light snowfall and a smattering of snow and every tree was covered in white.  It wasn’t to amount to too much but it was a beautiful sight.  The roads were cleared but I loved seeing the mantel of white.  Let us see what the rest of the fall and winter has in store for us.  I was out already once in my car to the post office but I had to drive cautiously.

There were several hundred blackbirds in that flock.  They were in the sky flying en mass.  They were tightly grouped and flying together not changing the distance between them much; thus flying as a mass.  I have no idea where they are migrating from or where they are going.  I just notice them coming through this area twice a year–fall and spring.  They are small blackbirds.  Sometimes they will stay in the area a day or two.  I just marvel how they keep so close together when they fly as a flock.  They are just a (???) one of many mysteries of nature to me.

To me it is a mystery why one plant blooms and the other four don’t.  There are five plants in that primrose bed and only one has flowers.  From experience I know they may bloom twice a year early spring and late fall.  I really don’t know why only one is blooming now.  It may be the light is just right.  I am only guessing.  I keep checking those plants.  At some point it will be too cold even for them.  The leaves will die and it will come up next spring.  Then I can enjoy them, again.

I stepped out and it was beautiful and I did not want to miss it.  There was not even a hint of a breeze and the sun was out and it was warm.  It was less than two weeks from the official beginning of winter.  Tomorrow was more of the same.  Then the temperature will drop and the weather would become more seasonable.  I wanted to catch part of the day outside.  Soon this gorgeous weather would just be a memory and I will have to bundle up every time I go outside.  Maybe I will go fishing tomorrow.  It will be more of the same temperatures.  And I want to take advantage of it.  Such weather was precious this time of year and the forecast for this winter was that it would be a cold one.  I don’t want this day to slip away.

It was a perfect fall day.  There was a dull roar in the background.  The wind was blowing hard.  Dried leaves were scattering everywhere.  It was, also, warm–in the high fifties.  I have never flown a kite but today I wanted to.  It was a great day for a ride to observe the rapidly changing landscape.  It was, simply, a great day to be alive and to enjoy Autumn.  Before we know it most of the leaves will have fallen and the cold will set in and then Winter will be next.  I really do not want to rush it and enjoy today.

I don’t know whether we will have another two straight days in the eighties.  It is already October ninth.  This could be the final burst of Indian summer so I just will enjoy the sunlight and temperatures.  There might be no more days like this.  It seemed as if the whole month of September was rainy and cloudy.  In fact, it broke all records for rainfall for one month.  My wife is basking in the sunlight and I will soon join her.  We are still celebrating her birthday.  She gets three birthday days this year.  In fact the weather is a gift.  It is, at least, the third straight sunny day.  Thank God for small favors.
