The tulips in the garden were still closed. I noted the time: it was 10:30AM. I guess when the day progresses the tulips will open and at the end of the day close, again. That is a big mystery why they do that but they do.

Our garden has never had so many flowers in it. Pansies are all over. The daffodils are still blooming and there are different varieties which make it fun to look at. These get less sun so they took longer to bloom. Others had finished their bloom weeks ago.

The row of tulips planted last year all came up. There are at least three different varieties among them: pink, yellow and pink ones with yellow on them.

My wife has planted some seeds and we are still waiting for them to come up. It is a mystery to me what causes seeds to germinate. I help her a little more now for she has a bad back. The five different colored primrose are still abloom. It is still cool. Every morning I walk around the garden to see what is coming up next. There are always surprises.

I looked high and low but I could not spot any more robins.  Every stretch of lawn I looked up and down but no more robins.  I almost doubted the bird I saw yesterday was a robin but I recognized its distinctive hop.  Maybe, it was one that did not migrate–not all do.  It was a warm day today.  Three different colored primrose were blooming–each flower contained a yellow star.  There were pink, white and a multitude of yellow flowers.  The purple crocus we transplanted a week ago were all blooming.  It was sunny and then it rained.  Spring was on the horizon.

The winter was perfect for the primrose.  It was so mild the primrose never died and flowered throughout the whole winter.  In the past there were seasons it bloomed twice–early spring and fall.  Not this season.  It bloomed throughout the whole winter and it appears it will continue through the spring.  At least through early spring.  It likes cold weather, but not warm weather.  I have never seen the primrose do this.  This indicates how mild the winter was this year.  Usually an extended freeze kills it and then it comes up, again, the following spring.  Just about every plant in the bed either has buds or is flowering.

To me it is a mystery why one plant blooms and the other four don’t.  There are five plants in that primrose bed and only one has flowers.  From experience I know they may bloom twice a year early spring and late fall.  I really don’t know why only one is blooming now.  It may be the light is just right.  I am only guessing.  I keep checking those plants.  At some point it will be too cold even for them.  The leaves will die and it will come up next spring.  Then I can enjoy them, again.

I keep checking the bed of primroses we have.  One plant is about to bloom a third yellow flower.  The other four plants do not have any buds but I keep checking them periodically.  Having flowers in 35 degree temperatures is a real treat as opposed to spring and summer when everything seems to be into bloom.  I will enjoy that budding plant today realizing how precious and rare it is.

The primrose finally bloomed.  They like the cold weather and I have been checking the bed of primrose for several weeks.  Sometimes they will bloom twice a year.  And there it was today:  one yellow flower.  I was excited about my discovery.  I will keep checking the bed of flowers to see whether more bloom and if there will be another color of primrose.  There are only five plants in that bed.  We will see.

Five light purple dahlias bloomed–the most at one time.  My other noticed the two plants months ago.  She had forgotten she even planted the bulbs.  They were beautiful flowers that found their way through a bed of black-eyed susans.  There is nothing like noting the latest surprises in your garden.  Now I am waiting to see whether the primrose will bloom again.  They really like cold weather.  We will see.

I Want To Stay Put Today

Author: siggy

I want to stay put today.  It is going to be a gorgeous day.  There are things to do around the house and particularly the garden.  There are primrose that need to be planted–four different colored buds and they are putting more flowers out.  Radishes need to be planted.  Onion sets, too.  The earth has to be prepared for them.  There is only a small window for that.  They like the cold weather.  I do not want to go far today.  If I only did those three things today, I will be happy.  The furthest I want to go away is in town.  It is going to be a beautiful day.

Spring was less than three days away.  It is a beautiful day.  The forecast said it would hit sixty degrees today.  The sky was blue with hardly a wisp of cloud.  I was tired of the cold temperatures.  I am ready for spring.  The daffodils are almost ten inches high.  I noted yesterday that one primrose was budding.  I was not sure we would have any.  Hope was on the horizon.  This long winter was almost over.

It was fifty outside and the thin pine trees were really swaying in the wind.  There was a dull roar in the background.  It was a perfect day to fly a kite except I didn’t have one.  This whole week promised to be above average temperatures.  Winter was winding down and this week was a preview of spring.  I just checked:  daffodils are poking their heads out of the soil.  Yesterday we saw pussy willow buds.  I am, next, searching for the primrose that come up even before the daffodils.  Winter is winding down.  Spring is now in the air.

Spring was less than a hair away–less than three weeks. Perhaps by then all the snow will have melted. The snow seems as if it was on the ground forever. Though it was only February and now the bare spots are bigger.

In fact, the daffodils have already poked their their heads through the ground. I checked today. The primrose can’t be too far behind.

I know the temperatures will rise gradually. Before I know it, spring will arrive and all this cold weather will just be a memory.

In ten weeks I will take my annual camping trip with Chuck. Maybe even catch some more trout on the lake. Who knows?

Though, I am still bundling up–even in the house. I don’t like to be cold. Winter is still a reality but I am now anticipating spring already and the warmer weather. I know it will have arrived for good when I start wearing my tee shirts again.

I still like watching my plants.  Of course, right now it is in the middle of winter so I am only looking at my indoor plants although sometimes the primrose under the tree bloom.  They like the cold.

Each day I go around my house and give all of them a quick glance.  My snake plant which is very slow growing I love.  It is over two feet high and I am admiring its tall leaves which are fringed yellow.  It is our latest acquisition.

My office has several plants over the book case facing the window:  several different type of cactus and succulents.

A week ago I noticed new growth out of the jade plant there.  It was a small discovery but it gave me joy.  Each day I look at it and see if I could note the change in size.  It seems to be growing very quickly.

To me it is all a mystery.  Why some grow or not or even die.  And I like the unknown and mysteries.  I do my best to place the plant in the right light and remember to properly water it when it needs it but still it is all a mystery to me.

The plants are like my little kids.  You never know exactly how they are going to turn out.  You just do your best tending and taking care of them.  And then rest and accept the results.  And do what you can, when you can.  And rest again.
